Semi-Pro

Fans of Ferrell’s usual schtick already know what to expect with this one, and will be thoroughly entertained. While Farrell’s more subdued roles are still my favorites, Semi-Pro is probably the film I’d want to watch again if I had to choose from the rest of his catalogue.

Whereas many of Will Ferrell’s films seem like vehicles created specifically to showcase a character Ferrell has created (which just so happens to be the same character nearly every time), Semi-Pro feels quite the opposite; it comes off as a film written without a specific actor in mind in which Ferrell was later asked to star. Of course, it’s very unlikely that’s the way it happened.

Fans of Ferrell’s usual schtick (Anchorman, Talladega Nights, Blades of Glory) already know what to expect with this one, and will be thoroughly entertained. While Farrell’s more subdued roles (Elf, Stranger Than Fiction) are still my favorites, Semi-Pro is probably the film I’d want to watch again if I had to choose from the rest of his catalogue. Semi-Pro is rated R, and it’s difficult to deny the novelty of seeing Ferrell pout and barrage other characters with strings of expletives that wouldn’t fly in a PG-13 flick.

Another thing Semi-Pro has going for it is the plot line involving Woody Harrelson’s character that some may find distracting, but for me, provided a welcome break from Ferrell’s antics for a small portion of the film. The jokes are hit-and-miss, much like Farrell’s other films, but there are a couple genuinely funny gags; one involving a rabid fan of Harrelson’s character, and another about the creation of the Alley Oop. If you’ve seen the trailer, you know what you’re getting into. No surprises here, good or bad.

Grade: C

Semi-Pro is rated R and in theatres tomorrow, February 29th.
